ok, back to the school of life. i was thinking how politeness may be insincere. we all got taught to be polite to one degree or another. we all got taught to fake it don't break it til you make it. then you can be mean as you wanna be. although people in their natural state would not wish harm on another and would want to be cooperative kind and reciprocal. but school teaches independence and competition. sorey kids. you were also taught not to question authority by authority, etcetera. you're gonna have to learn for yourself how to love and let live. society is not your mother.
alain de botton talks about frankness and politeness. one can be honest or frankly brutal, and one can be sincerely polite and gentle or a smiley face saboteur. a lot of us probably vacillate wildly or civilizedly between the two modes of polite and frank. we were told to not say anything if you can't say anything nice and i said almost nothing for years unless i had to, and then i wondered what punishment i might be about to receive for being frank. i learned the best answer was i don't know even if it provoked consternation.
