is it true there are only 73 orcas left? i remember seeing more than that pass between gabriola and valdez islands in one migration. what year was that? 1982?
i just looked up gabriola to see what the island next to it was, we called it sheep island because it was once inhabited by shepherds but they moved or died off and only the wild sheep were still there. the news says yesterday there was a plane crash on the island. gabriola. first time i went people were living in tents and getting an acre of land for a dollar after 6 months. the second time the mayer of vancouver was building a summer house. i can imagine the influx in the last 37 years. all those petroglyphs under houses. all the trees felled. wow, that island i went to only exists in my mind, in the past, under a crust of modern houses. i wonder what happened to the hippies in their tree houses, felled by the waves of gentrification? and the natives who held on tenaciously to little tips of land? it hurts to think of this.
post dat. r. tells me she just read about a resident on gabriola protesting all the mcmansions being built there.
