it was the last summer of pebble beach and we knew it. the beach was already gone. it was a narrow man-made strip eroding and the lake taking down the limestone wall and the concrete slabs we loved to dive from and sun on. we knew it was the end, and it felt like a time out of time, a private place feet from the furious automatic drive. it was the last summer of mister and as such it will always be. i remember floating in the shallows feeling the pebbles and watching the total eclipse of the sun. we talk about portals nowadays. pebble beach was one.

i'm glad we were here before it disappeared.
