i was thinking more about antonioni's comment. he said the industrial landscape was more interesting and faceted than the line of trees on the other side. he said there was nothing behind them but wilderness. yeah, wilderness is so boring. where's the story? i wonder what he would say when the trees were gone? there's nothing behind them. maybe they left a beauty screen along the road, and behind the screen, nothing, well something, a grave grove of ghost trees, a wilderness of stumps. now i still love antonioni but i have to think, he would have made great movies about wilderness, had he directed his attention beyond the screen.
there may be trees again behind the beauty screen, but they will be monoculture trees, not tree community. they will be harvested as soon as they grow up to be viable products for human utility, like the animals.
