hugh said they murdered every last tree and i said they left one little tree outside the circle garden. jeannette said the last little tree is gone. i looked and it's still there. it could have been chopped without a thought like the rest and i wonder why not. it's still there between a cartload of dead trees and an empty cart. they thought about this little tree. they left a space for it between the low black fabric fence. they thought of it, but what? a symbol of the care they didn't give the canopy, the community? a symbol of hope to remind us how tenuous hope is, how easily lost?
