I went to look for the sunrise and it was a red glow. I looked down and the evergreen was lighted in the courtyard. As I passed the tinsel tree it lit up. I remember in the past streetlights going out as i passed. I was reading about Cyprus in The Island of Missing Trees about how the Greek and Turkish factions would burn trees and kill each other under colonialism and I remembered the burnt trees on Spetsai, where John Fowles taught at a British boys school and wrote The Magus. Then I thought of Gabriola, named by the Spanish colonists, and I still want to know who carved the petroglyphs I saw there, and what they mean, and I thought i might ask an artist who lives up there. And just now I see a picture of a burnt Christmas tree in Jenin.
