the commons isn't in the hands of common people, it's in the control of the oligarchy. we don't decide what happens to the parks or the lakeshore. we just have to live in the city and the world controlled by forces beyond our control. we can try to vote particular oligarchs out, but the oligarchy has the next oligarch primed for power and waiting in the wings. the commons if it ever was is not anymore.
