v.p. henry wallace in 1944 wrote,

the american fascists are most easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact. their newspapers and propaganda carefully cultivate every fissure of disunity, every crack in the common front against fascism. they use every opportunity to impune democracy. their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjection.

some have spoken of the american century. i say that the century on which we are entering, the century which will come into being after this war, can be and must be the century of the common man. no nation will have the [god-given] right to exploit other nations. but there must be neither military nor economic imperialism.

somehow i never heard about henry wallace. he might have said the same thing today. i guess he has.
