there is an inverse relationship between the crude, boorish, psychotic and destructive,
and the whimsical, lilting, playful and magical. the relationship is a mystery requiring further study but no explanation.

-in the interview of paul holdengraber and john berger p.h. reads j.b. a poem.

(In my sleep I dreamed this poem)
Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.

                                                                Mary Oliver,
                                           The Uses of Sorrow.

john berger makes sounds of pleasure, saying, yes, yes, yes, wonderful, so you feel him through the air waves, across the ocean. paul holdengraber asks, wanting to keep him on the line a little longer, can i read it to you again? and does. wonderful, yes, yes yes, john says.
