a fellow came out of the same door as yesterday and greeted us, smiling, and said he must bring a lot of joy to the world with the kind of emphasis that made my skin tingle all the way up my spine and my face. i said he does, after nine years or so, every time i see him smile i smile.
then, as it sometimes uncannily happens, the polar opposite occurs. a man on the other side of the street in brown fedora, brown overcoat, brown shoes, brown brow, and black glasses was staring intently at us not once, but repeatedly and i looked and smiled and said what a strange fellow. he also we had seen before in the same spot in front of the sweet fellow's door, and each time he walked at the edge of the verge on the curb to avoid us.
both of these events inevitably entwine in my head.
yet they are quite distinct; one of them is clear and light, and the other closed and dark. i want to go there and open his heart.
