this was an ephemeral wetland fed by an underground stream. the park district insisted on making a great lawn of it, chopping up snakes and making muddy furrows. i remember killdeer trying to nest here, displaced by the mowers. now obama has appropriated it as an extension of his land grab for a deluxe special needs playground. it could have been a nature sanctuary for special needs. it could have been what it was trying to be.
