america is the thug of the world. america breeds monsters, from the thugs on the bike path to the superpredators of power in corporate government.

my friend pat sent me a link to a video of thugs attacking a pedestrian on 47th street bridge saying she was glad i had dogs with me, and i do feel some protection with them. i've been accosted near the same bridge on the path on my bike. a thug stepped onto the path thinking i'd stop and i sped up to full and charged directly at him and he jumped aside terrified. my instinct acted, but if i had hit the thug who knows what would have ensued.

i'll never take up arms in this brutal world. i hope my wits and my dogs protect me.
i've said ad nauseum america breeds violence throughout the world and in our own cities. we are in the process of some kind of collapse never seen before.

i went out thinking mild thoughts, mild weather, but the west wind turned out to be more violent than the north wind yesterday, and as cold. passing by the mac vortex heading south i was unable with all my strength to pedal through. i saw my friend jim coming. we talked about the winter. he's recovering from a fall on the ice during the polar vortex by the lake. he fell backwards, his leg twisted behind him, broke his ankle and couldn't move for an hour. his dog eventually attracted the attention of a couple who rescued him. i told him how sorry i am and wished i had been walking that day, but that was when i had my own affliction and couldn't walk.

what is happening is terrifying. from the brutality of the empire to the brutality of the neighborhood, to the random afflictions of our own bodies.

yet in this horror find love and beauty, find that it has always been this way, violence and grace, new precedents are set as the regime gets more power, yet the same natural laws will govern sooner or later, one way or another, however degraded human society and the environment get, regardless of the madness and violence of the system. every system will fall apart eventually. i just wonder what will survive this empire of destruction.
