saw margaret at the elevator. riding up with her i noted a bunny in a circle with ideograms on her t-shirt. what's the bunny for? it's from a temple story*, the bunny self-sacrificed for the buddha, she said. i found that funny and thought of the bunnies margaret sacrificed in the garden. for buddha, or carrots. you could plant extra carrots for the buddha. i don't know if she knew what i was thinking. why would the bunny self-sacrifice for buddha? indeed, why would you kill the buddha on the road? i was thinking, do you see how adorable the bunny is on you? i'll see you in the garden! i said.
*the story goes that when the buddha was still a bodhisattva, in one life, in the form of a bunny one day a wanderer priest came and said he was hungry and the bunny said, i got nothing to give but myself, and jumped in the fire. the wanderer priest was really sakra, lord of the devas, and said, i was only testing you! and made the fire cold. then he painted the bunny's selfless likeness on the wandering moon.
