you remember in the winter when we found that book in the park, seven brief lessons on physics? remember i put it on your head like a peaked hat?
today i found a new book by the same fellow, the order of time.
right off, i felt the same wonder, and the first paragraph brought me back to the water this morning, and the post that came out of the water. let me see, maybe i have to look back,...first i'll write. i think i said that in the water we're outside time...(i look back) i wrote that
in the water time dissolves. we are not in suspense, not suspended in time.
carlo rovelli wrote... we inhabit time as fish live in water. our being is being in time.
i thought of time as water. maybe in water our time dissolves into all times.
like a fish in water we are in time, in our skin, in our own time, a dog in the moment, a fish out of water, we come from time...
thought of a fish in water seeing the trails of planes in the sky, time in another world, a layer directly above this. a fish not counting time, who might break the surface for a flying insect, a brief silvery flash of time.
i wrote how i flowed like water through traffic in time. in the time of water in the time of traffic, flowing in the headlong rush.
in the water it feels like being. being free in time. floating in the time of currents and waves, heads above water. the planes tracing the skies, divisions of space, ordered time, crossing and crossing, ahead and behind, trails of exhaust dissolving in altitude time. and blazing past in cars, blazing relentlessly the same trail, the eternal return, time committed, commuted time.
but what is the time we are in? the space between us that we affect one another. time shared. time like water.
we come to think of time as something that needs doing, that is scarce, that we serve, something measured by instruments made to divide and add and spend in units we devise.
time as division, separation, time waiting, anticipating, wasted, time as money. the waste of life, adding and spending. being money. serving time.
we are ahead of our time, we are behind the times, we are in our time, our time is not ours. hours to earn time. time is passing, we are passing time, others, not us, are passing on, (in their own time). we might have children in time. when we run out the children of time will run on.
time passes slower at sea level. so it makes time sense to feel slowed in time, to feel the body time of a fish in water, and the ticking sound immersed sounds like a heartbeat, time inside mother.
with practice, anyone can witness the slowing down of time.
