here come the sandhill cranes.
the cranes converge in this one field at dusk and have a social hour until dark among the deer and the people with binoculars. while we were there a bald eagle soared in and the whole crowd flew up and away but they came back minutes later. when darkness falls they all rise again together and move into the swamp to sleep in the trees. they stand in the water through the night. there are around 25,000 now at peak time, and 5,000 stay over the winter. as each year warms more stay. we see signs of farms for sale and hope they become swamp again. the present swamp is getting too small. some chucklehead from north dakota brags about shooting cranes at home and i wonder why he has to speak it in the presence of people who feel awe just observing them. it's a different branch of the crane family he eats, but all the cranes have been migrating since long before we started draining the swamps and dividing the land.
happier days.
we don't look forward to happier days. we have em. dogs don't anyway, and most all days are happy. not just because they're dogs if you think that. we could be that way too. we made a mental mess as well as environmental. still we along with dogs have happier days. i was soul pleased with my dear lulu today. we went section to section of the midway down to the skating rink. i know lulu would love to skate and i wonder if they might no i know have a dog skating time i know i guess not silly if there was pond or well there's not unless the lagoon freezes solid but it just keeps getting warmer do we wish for a vortex? no i guess not. we take the days as they come not looking too far into the unknown.
bear on wall.
um, the word of the day is legerity and blogspot don't recognize it. it's not soul hellish today, milder, less crazed, almost a peaceful bardo between shopping holidays. bear is still prey wild but it's not her problem, the leash is her problem, and mine, if she can get to the point where she's with me like lulu in an open space and won't vacate we can unleash her spirit. on good days i know we'll get there. dogs weren't born for the leash anymore than humans. we're all born to be free yet we make wars and prisons and austerity. legerity means
the gracefulness of a person or animal that is quick and nimble, lightsomeness,
alert quickness of mind or body, all the wonderful qualities of little bear. today she discovered ice by jumping on the sea wall and skating. while we're leashed together we need to abstain from pulling across icy patches. we went to the model yacht pond basin and ran around and it was big fun and circle free.
i can't lose the anxiety, i'm not alright, not doing things right, i'm up at 1.05, that shouldn't be. it's not the wind. i hear it fluttering the plastic flags on the roof next door, close in the loose storm window. my heart grasps nothing like a stiffened fist. it's not solitary, my prehensile thinking, it's in the flight of birds. i'm a pattern of ligaments and bones, thin and paunchy, slipping with swoops and sinewy beats. i'm small prey, a vole in a tuft of weeds.
