there is no beginning and no end, but rather many beginnings and many endings. this is one of the many mysteries of pilgrimage. there is only the path traveled. to journey is to join an infinite procession of footsteps, histories, and legends. to journey is to seek. it is to come out of time. the world around a pilgrimage is always changing. the years may wear away stone and pave highways. cities expand out ward like the rings of an ancient cedar. the mystery of the quest, the spiritual journey, remains. the pilgrimage will begin again and again: today and tomorrow, and in times far from now and unknown, as pilgrims continue to see a familiar, well-traveled route. the pilgrimage is an endless circle if the seeker desires it: no beginning, and no end.
(shikoku pilgrimage, emergence magazine)
