we watched i was a simple man, and i'm reading a memory of leo marx. thinking about simplicity, the need. how the need ramifies in a body in the complexified world. ok too heady, if i could but simplify. he was a simple man from japan living in oahu hawaii and it starts toward the end when he's looking at a mass of towers and concrete and saying this was all green and he's poor and he has cancer and his roof leaks on his wife's alter. it's about contrariety in human nature, the divergence of humans from nature. and from each other, so his simple wish set him apart from society and family, yet in the end he's in touch with the spirit world and the part of the others that always has the same simple wish to be natural in the environment that gets shrouded in human development. leo marx was an urban pastoralist. he wrote about technological progress and the cumulative longterm degradation of the environment. i hope you can watch the movie.
