in 36 minutes i have an interview with openlands. i think they have not taken action regarding the theft of public parkland by the obama foundation. and i understand if in their wisdom they concede that there is no hope. i'm not naive about the power this man wields. and though i value any land they may be able to save, this is my focus, what is vital to me. where obama makes his plans is where i live. they may consider the power too great to engage in this time. they may want to remain neutral, but as howard zinn maintains, you can't stay neutral on a moving train. and if we concede this public land, the precedent will set, again, that no land is public any longer, it's just undeveloped land waiting for the next deal.
i just want to say how vital the park is, and what the loss means, to the health and survival of community. i want to make a passionate plea for nature and community. obama's plans are a private corporate land grab, and contrary to his propaganda, his corporate campus will not foster community, but rather will displace, and replace community, as we are already beginning to see. the footprint of his construction will far exceed it's actual (illegal) footprint. it will be the end of a sanctuary, and it will spread like every development, making money for the monied, rolling over community.
postscript. i spoke with zahra, the summer intern at openlands, and of course my heart started going wild with passion about saving jackson park, and i kept trying to breathe and not fly off into the wild blue yonder, and i hope i was simply emphatic and not crazy.
the thing that saddens me is openlands policy is acceptance of the obama land grab in lieu of some other unspecified land that will be given to replace what they take. it is irreplaceable. that's why obama wants it. breathe, d. i said my peace. i defended nature, the commons, green space, community, and open land.
