one of the early symptoms of nostalgia recorded by hofer was the sufferer's belief that ghosts had visited and spoken to them. for such sufferers, the ghost arose from the permanence of death, its voice an echo rebounding against the hard reality of the world. this echo or phantom was the aftermath of extinction.
