it grows more and more savage, this american civilization. this morning crossing the crosswalk i was nearly crushed by a bus. i was halfway across, he was close enough that i put my hands up and slapped his window, i said crosswalk! pedestrian! and he opened the passenger door to spit, i can kill you. just wait. i said watch yourself, motherfucker.        
  there was a crossing guard watching, but that's just for kids. they aren't there to save grownups. this is daily life now, civilization lived out on the street. i hate this civilization.

  then, literally tilting forward in the wind tunnel by the solstice tower, i thought, 
  we may be tilting at windmills trying to save the park from the prime predators, but hell, we're tilting at windmills just trying to cross the street.
