there's a state of deep absorption where all mental activity is suspended, called nirodha-samāpatti. i imagine the monks who set themselves afire must have been in that state. it is said that practitioners who enter that state are absolutely clear. there are states of consciousness i cannot imagine but i like to ponder them.
