are we smart enough to know what animals think? i think so, if we can just leave our prejudices aside. i was reading that book and thinking about mister having inferential reasoning when he goes to the park shore for a treat and then looks for the other doorman in the little room inside. he's never seen them at the same time, but he knows they both hold and proffer the same treats. inferential reasoning is not inconsistent with magical thinking.
