i kept waking up snatching at dreams like fireflies that turned lights off as soon as you reach them and disappear, the opposite of those phosphorescent creatures of the night water that light up when you approach and dance in the movement your oar creates like spiral galaxies being born. i came up empty.

i could not sleep for anticipation.
the freest association faded to a mumble.
left on a wisp
a breath
a sigh
a breeze. and then, again
the heat building, up
to the roof to storm
release
and build us
over again.
