last night we watched evil does not exist. it's about a community in the forest in japan that is threatened by a developer who wants to make a glamping ground. i was impressed by the integrity of the community. they resisted. i think about the obama land grab in the park. the disdain of the developer. the gaslighting about improvement. the community here sold a bogus dream of hope and change, or resigned by long experience of gentrification by the rich and powerful, to the loss of the park, and the displacement of the community. i think of how blithely they characterize progress, as automatic good, beyond good and evil. i think of what some guy told me once, a clerk in the video store, that evil does not exist, that what i call evil is just opportunity. that makes me so sad, years later, as i look down below and see the obamachron in the park.
