how & why might a momentary feeling take root in your mind?

interest alone gives accent & emphasis, light & shade, background & foreground, intelligible
perspective, in a word.

socrates thought humans were motivated by reason,

but behavior is more a matter of focus than of reason.
without selective focus, experience is chaos.

there's a conflict between
the demands of the present
and early memories.

response to the assault of the everyday,
anxiety created as a diversion from life.
