i wouldn't be the first
to point out the american capacity for self-delusion.
one of the main reasons for the criticism of american society
by the students for a democratic society
the student nonviolent coordinating committee
and other groups
is that our society is exclusive while maintaining
that it is inclusive.
although automation has prompted some rethinking
about the myth of upward mobility
few people are realistic
about the ways in which one legally can
"make it" here
or who can make it.

...i'm thinking, is there even an equivalent now of the sds or the sncc? when i was listening to a puerto rican on the radio this morning say how there is little or no protest, because they've been a colony so long, and who you gonna protest to? i'm thinking now how it's really the same here. we are colonized by power and privilege. we are divided and conquered, we are free individuals colonized by the power in our own country. and we never learn, we still judge a man by the color of his skin.
