beuys wanted to insulate himself, to cover himself in felt and concentrate only on the coyote, see nothing of america other than the coyote. 
for native people the coyote was an embodiment of transformation and could change from
the physical to the spiritual at will. 
white people saw his ingenuity and adaptability as low and cunning. they treated the coyote as a social menace. they took revenge.  
beuys saw the tendency to offload a sense of inferiority onto an object of hatred or a minority, that america's deep sense of inferiority drives it to exterminate the object of its hatred.
beuys' understood the enormous energy of the animals, that they have preserved 
intact the abilities lost or undeveloped in humans. 
coyote is the principle of transformation, transformation of the idea of freedom, 
the transformation of language to a wider understanding of it as an evolutionary means.
