we went to the audubon meeting on the beleaguered jackson park. the deals have been made, and we with our ears to the ground and the other animals looking for home, the first to feel and the last to know, are dealt with and dealt out. yet some progress may be halted by scrutiny and vigilance and the dogged insistence of natural right. there's little of nature left in human nature, but it's worth the struggle, it's worth preserving.

but then we just dropped the mother of all bombs on afghanistan and we think we're going to save our little island? maybe that makes it even more important. isn't there some power left to people, isn't there something we can save?
